British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
