The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
